How daily overtime is calculated
California pays overtime on hours above 8 in a day at 1.5x and above 12 at 2x, on top of the federal 40-hour weekly rule. Enter your rate and the hours you worked in the day; the calculator splits the day and shows regular pay, the overtime premium, and gross pay.

California's two overtime layers
California stacks a daily rule on top of the federal weekly one. Beyond 8 hours in a single day you earn 1.5x; beyond 12 hours you earn 2x. On the seventh consecutive day of work you earn 1.5x for the first 8 hours and 2x after. Both the daily and the weekly 40-hour rules can apply in the same pay period.
Worked example. At $20/h for a 13-hour day: the first 8 hours = $160, hours 8–12 (4h) = $20 × 4 × 1.5 = $120, and the final hour over 12 = $20 × 1 × 2 = $40. Daily pay = $320 — versus $260 if only weekly overtime applied. This calculator applies the daily mode automatically for California.
