How overtime is calculated
Overtime is paid on the hours above your threshold at the overtime multiplier. Enter your hourly rate, the total hours you worked, the regular (non-overtime) hours, the threshold, and the multiplier; the calculator shows regular pay, overtime pay, and gross pay. Commissions and allowances are folded into the regular rate first, so the overtime line uses the fuller rate.

Canada's 44-hour threshold
Most Canadian provinces set the overtime threshold at 44 hours per week, paid at 1.5x. A few differ: Alberta uses 8 hours per day or 44 per week, Quebec is 40 per week, and some industries have their own standards under the relevant Employment Standards Act. This calculator uses the common 44-hour weekly threshold.
Worked example. At CA$24/h for 50 hours: 44 × $24 = $1,056 regular, 6 × $24 × 1.5 = $216 overtime, gross $1,272. If your province uses a different threshold, change the threshold field to match — for example 40 for Quebec.
As in the US, commissions and most bonuses count toward the regular rate and raise the overtime amount. Some provinces also allow daily overtime or averaging agreements, so check your provincial employment standards if your schedule is unusual.
Some provinces average hours. Alberta and a few others allow averaging agreements where overtime is based on the average over a set period, not a single week. If your workplace averages, one week's total may understate your overtime.
Statutory holidays add another layer. In most provinces, working on a public holiday can trigger premium pay on top of overtime, and some agreements treat the holiday as straight time plus a substitute day. The calculator models only the weekly overtime threshold; add any holiday premium separately using the shift differential tool if your employer pays one.
